We’ve all been there. You’ve just started getting the hang of your budget, you’ve found a “cheese station” (a steady part-time job, a decent student loan payment, or a reliable savings account), and you feel secure. Then, life happens, rent increases, a surprise bill pops up, or your income stream shifts.

Suddenly, the cheese is gone.

If you’ve ever read Spencer Johnson’s classic fable, Who Moved My Cheese?, you know the story of four characters in a maze: the mice, Sniff and Scurry, and the little people, Hem and Haw. Their struggle to find new cheese when their supply runs out is the perfect metaphor for navigating your personal finances as a student or young professional.

Here is how you can use the “maze” to master your money.

In the book, Hem and Haw get comfortable at “Cheese Station C,” assuming the supply will last forever. As young people, it’s easy to do the same—assuming your current income or living situation will never change.

The Money Lesson:

  • Build an Emergency Fund: Never assume the “cheese” is permanent. Always keep a buffer for when the unexpected hits.
  • Smell the Cheese Often: Stay informed. Whether it’s inflation, changes in interest rates, or shifting job trends, keep your eyes open so you aren’t blindsided when your financial situation evolves.

When the cheese disappears, Hem stays behind, hoping and complaining that the old cheese will return. He is paralyzed by fear and denial.

The Money Lesson:

  • Avoid the “It Was Better Before” Trap: When money gets tight, wasting energy complaining about how things used to be doesn’t put money back in your pocket.
  • Take Action, Not Offense: If your bank cuts interest rates or your favourite budget app starts charging a subscription fee, don’t just get angry. Start “running the maze.” Find a new bank or a new, free tool.

Sniff and Scurry didn’t overanalyse; they just kept running. They didn’t attach their identity to a specific pile of cheese.

The Money Lesson:

  • Embrace Financial Agility: If a side hustle isn’t paying off, pivot quickly. If a specific saving goal isn’t realistic, adjust it immediately.
  • Learn New Skills: The best way to ensure you always have “cheese” is to increase your value. Use your student years to learn digital skills, take certifications, or explore side-hustles. The more you learn, the faster you can navigate the maze when the job market changes.

Haw eventually realizes that staying in a “cheeseless” situation is riskier than facing the maze. He writes on the walls: “The quicker you let go of old cheese; the sooner you find new cheese.”

The Money Lesson:

  • Let Go of Bad Debt or Habits: Sometimes you have to let go of old financial habits—like expensive subscriptions you don’t use or “keeping up” with friends’ spending—to find a better financial path.
  • See Change as Opportunity: A change in your financial status is often the push you need to start investing, look for a higher-paying role, or finally learn how to properly manage your budget.

Your 20s are the biggest “maze” you will ever run through. You will have times when your money is plentiful and times when it vanishes. Don’t be the person waiting for the old cheese to come back.

Put on your running shoes, keep your eyes open, and stay ready to find the next, better station.
